Mrs. Tardif’s and Mrs. Bush’s Kindergarten Update

Week Ending May 15, 2009

 A Peek At The Week

This week we …

Ÿ         Enjoyed listening to the silly story, Five Little Monkeys Swinging in a Tree, and then took turns acting out the parts.

Ÿ         Reviewed the name and value of a penny, nickel, dime and quarter.

Ÿ         Played a dinosaur memory matching game in small groups.

Ÿ         Brought in pennies to add to the Pennies for People collection.

Ÿ         Perfected the days of the week in German!

Ÿ         Practiced jumping rope.

Ÿ         Estimated the number of quarters in a small jar, then verified the amount to see if each student was ‘way too high’, ‘way too low’ or ‘pretty close’.

Looking Ahead

  Next week we will…

·        Create a class book about numbers.

·        Play the “Plus or Minus Game” with number cubes and counters.

·        Listen to the daily adventures of Little Caterpillar, our last book buddy of the year.

·        Design and make ‘how to’ booklets during writing workshop.

·        Explore new websites so we can hear the sounds of various whale calls under the ocean.

·        Count by 2’s to 50. Please practice at home as well!

·        Play “Go For the Dough” which is a fun synonym game.

Upcoming Event

On May 29th our Kindergarten classes will have a very special event at Woodside School. Istar the Whale will be here in our gymnasium. This is a hands-on exploration lesson provided by the Children’s Museum of Portland. The children will learn interesting facts about whales and other sea life.

Reminders

·         As fun as it is to wear sandals in warm weather, we really need the children to wear sneakers every day of the week, for motor group and PE. This is for safety reasons, especially when they use the equipment at recess time.

·         The children are doing a fantastic job at managing their own lunch tickets. This will help them to be fully prepared for first grade expectations.

·         On May 27th, we will have Step Up Day. This will be an opportunity for your child to meet the first grade teachers and see their pod. The children will find out in August which teacher they will have in first grade.

Special Thanks

To all the families who donated Clorox wipes to our classes!
